An Introduction
The fundamental
idea of The Selfish Team is that teams - however they are constituted
- are primarily driven by the emotions and needs of the individuals in
the team. My assertion is that teams function most successfully
by recognising and using the emotion of selfishness. I believe that
human beings will co-operate with each other if co-operation satisfies
a personal objective.
The Selfish Team
model recognises that, under pressure, our emotions take over in immediate,
powerful and intensely subjective ways. We tend to act first and
think afterwards. In our struggle to work rationally and intelligently,
our emotions repeatedly make themselves known and it is this that makes
us human. This is the challenge of working with other people but
if understood and harnessed, it is this emotional intelligence that helps
us accept and value the importance of all styles in a team.
The Selfish Team
is not a simple solution to the challenge of teamwork. It requires long-term
commitment and an investment in behavioural awareness and role-modelling.
The
success of The Selfish Team should be measured just like any other business
investment, i.e. by assessing its impact on the achievement of the organisations
strategy and objectives. We are now launching The Selfish Team programme
containing modules and tools for implementing the process described in
the book. If you would like an e-brochure, click
